Its day five of Phils 1995 Pennine Way diary. DAY FIVE East Marton to Malham Wednesday 26th July 1995 Here we are in the Buck Inn in Malham, a tacky tourist establishment streamlined for the swift extraction of money. Still, I have an icepack on my leg and a pint of Theakstones Old Peculiar on the table and a fresh vegetable pasta thing on its way. Im also smelling strongly of TCP. We stopped off at Gargrave along the way and bought the aforementioned ointment plus a new bandage. Gargrave was a nice stop. We went into a cafe and I had poached eggs on toast and the most enormous imaginable pot of tea: I got four mugs out of it and still had to leave some. We also called in at the supermarket and stocked up on food for the wilder reaches tomorrow. We crashed out in the park for a while and ate yoghurts and bread and Dairylea and apples and plums. It was so much healthier than nineteen years ago when John and I ate chicken and chips, Mars Bars and peanuts all the time. My leg felt pretty good this morning - perhaps it sensed it only had ten miles to do. For some reason we managed to walk through the hottest part of the day - getting up late and arriving early. It was another scorcher although somewhat ameliorated by a strong wind. At some point Wendy was to be seen hiding behind a fence trying to avoid a bull even though the bull was otherwise distracted sniffing the privates of his little harem. We bumped into Craig and Monica from time to time and put together some of their story - Craig has never done long distance walking before but he does do a lot of marathons so hes quite a fit guy; even so hes finding the Pennine Way a real struggle. And thus to Malham which is a trifle disappointing being far too touristy. I forgot to mention that we happened upon four guys from Morecambe today; theyre doing the Pennine Way, but laced with plenty of Lancashire humour. Theyve just ambled over to have a look at my leg. They were impressed and vowed never to complain about their blisters.
