Its hasnt been a great year for me as a FATHER because my daughter Lily Marie Vasquez Lopez lost her life BECAUSE a non commitment donor. Please read what my daughter wrote before she accepted to undergo the experimental bone marrow transplant. Please share her letter with your facebook contacts. #doitforlily In todays society everyone is not as worried for one another as we were in before. We spend our days glued to our electronic screens rather than interacting with our fellow men. I wish there was a way that’d we could band together as a nation and raise the awareness of the need for more donors to be added to the bone marrow registry. Many people might not know what the registry is, but that’s why I say awareness needs to be raised! Everyone one way or another has to know someone affected by cancer somewhere in their life, and if they are lucky enough they weren’t in need of a transplant. There is also that other half of those affected by cancer like me who weren’t so lucky and ARE in need of a transplant to save their life. For me this transplant can mean an actual chance at returning back to being able to live a regular life without having to call the hospital my second home. On my journey through this difficult battle I’ve met many other children in need of a transplant. Some children were lucky enough to find a donor, but with that some sadly did not find match or they did but the donor declined, these children usually did not make it. Knowing the truth and reality of it all is a bit frightening, because knowing that this is the difference between life and death for me is something big. People decline to sign up most of the times because they say it’s not affecting them so why should they become a donor. You see the selfness now a days is flat out ridiculous; I’m sure if the shoe was on the other foot those same people who declined would want someone to sign up to widen the chances of finding a match for their loved one greater. I’m lucky to have a whole network of people out there in my community who help broaden those chances not only for me but for other children, and these people and myself will not stop once I get better we plan to keep adding and adding people to the registry. I believe in paying it forward and this is one way me and my family do so. I know this might help save someone’s life and in knowing that bring me joy. Going through chemotherapy and radiation is a tough thing there are days where I just want to stay in bed, days where all I want to do it sleep, and days I just feel like giving up. What I would do to be able to go out every day with my friends, ride all the rides at a carnival without worrying of getting hurt, going to visit a sick loved one without worrying if their sickness will send me to the E.R, or even just worrying about throwing up when I go out because of the medicine they’re giving me. To those who decline to sign up because they think it doesn’t affect them just take the time and think what doing this could mean for someone like me. I’d be the most thankful person in the world because it’s basically giving me a chance at a life I haven’t even got to live yet. I would live my life to the fullest and do everything I possibly could. I hope you will be able to help me accomplish my mission and help people get informed.
