Its really upsetting to see so many comments (on Facebook as well as by celebrities) about suicide being the easy way out or cowardly or selfish. Depression is a serious illness. It affects rational thought processes and impacts their world view. It is not a sign of weakness.... it is a last ditch attempt at stopping unbearable pain when all other methods have failed them. These people are in serious need of help, support and love. Continuing to use terms like coward or selfish or weak perpetuates the public misunderstanding of what depression is, and it is the fear of labels like these that keep people from seeking out the help they desperately need in their darkest hour. PLEASE, be sensitive in your speech. I have lost several people who I loved dearly to suicide and depression, and reading these comments is hurtful. And if you are struggling with depression yourself, please please please talk to someone about it!
