Its so nice to grow, make and use fresh Aloe Vera gel but there is a knack to it. First, when you start to grow your own Aloe Vera its best to be aware of the conditions it grew in prior to you getting it. It can tolerate either shade or sun but doesnt respond well to sudden changes. So if your Aloe Vera came from a sunny site in a friends garden, try to replicate those conditions in your own. Or keep your plant in a shady place if it has come from a shaded nursery. We prefer to grow it in semi shade as it seems to yield more of the lovely clear gel. To extract the gel, gently remove a leaf from the plant, choose a nice big fat one. Carefully slice off the spines on each side of the leaf with a paring knife. Then lay the leaf flat on a board and slice through the middle of the leaf to filet it. Use a teaspoon to gently ease away the the clear gel, dont scrape hard enough to lift any greeny yellow juice from the inside of the leaf lining. This juice is known as aloin, it is a type of plant latex and can be quite irritating to the skin. this lovely fresh Aloe Vera gel is best used immediately.
