Its that time of year again in Arizona when too many hours outdoors makes you begin to feel like a filet mignon thats a little on the well done side. That also means that your lawn is especially susceptible to heat stress as well. But dont fall into the trap of overwatering. The secret to maintaining a healthy yard during these dog days of summer is less frequent, deep irrigations. Instead of a daily light sprinkle, that probably evaporates 30 minutes after the sprinklers shut off, try irrigating only 2 to 3 days a week, leaving each station on for 10 to 15 min each or until the water begins to stand. This will drive the moisture down deep into the root zone where the majority of nutrients are stored by the bermuda grass. Now different parts of the valley have varying soil types and compaction ratios so it may take some fine tuning on your part but over the long term you will save water and enjoy a healthier, lush green lawn this summer!
