Ateneo goes for its fifth win in a row against University of the Philippines to open the new year. Fresh from a long rest and filled with confidence after a successful international stint, the Ateneo Lady Eagles will again spread its wings when action in the 77th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament resumes Sunday at The Arena in San Juan. The defending champion stakes its clean record in the 2:00 p.m. match as it takes on a confident University of the Philippines Lady Maroons side for the division’s first match for 2015. Ateneo has yet to concede a set this season after a perfect four-game sweep to end 2014 and settles at second place behind league-leading archrival La Salle Lady Spikers (5-0). Alyssa Valdez, Ella De Jesus, Bea De Leon, Michelle Morente and libero Denden Lazaro return to action after an early break from collegiate volleyball last month as Ateneo donned the national colors in the country’s bronze medal finish in the 17th Palembang ASEAN University Games in Indonesia. “The experience we gained in the ASEAN University Games where we played strong teams like Thailand and Indonesia will surely be a big advantage for the Lady Eagles when play again in the UAAP,” Ateneo team manager Tonyboy Liao said. Ateneo will have a tight opening week, playing in three of the last four playdates in the first round eliminations including a back-to-back game against University of the East Lady Warriors and the much anticipated rematch with the Lady Spikers on January 11. The Lady Eagles are coming from an easy 25-21, 25-13, 25-19, victory over University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses last December 6. UP, meanwhile, will ride on its 25-14, 25-19, 25-16 demolition of the Lady Warriors last December 10. The Lady Maroons, tied with National U Lady Bulldogs with two wins in five games at fifth to sixth place, will rely on Nicole Tiamzon, Angeli Araneta and Katherine Bersola to matchup with Ateneo’s fire-power.
