Its the birthday of Henry Le Châtelier, who was born in 1850 in Paris. Le Châtelier trained as an engineer but chose instead to pursue a career in chemistry. He is best known for his eponymous principle, which says that If a chemical system at equilibrium experiences a change in concentration, temperature or total pressure, the equilibrium will shift in order to minimize that change. Le Châteliers principle comes into play in many settings, including climate change, where it has been invoked to predict the atmospheres and oceans response to rising levels of carbon dioxide.
