It’s Monday, Sept. 30, the last day of September. Here is some of what Sun staffers and other news providers are working on for lowellsun and Tuesday’s print edition of the newspaper. • Enterprise Editor Christopher Scott, cscott@lowellsun, has a story about Ronnie Mercier, the former Dracut School Committee member who was fired from his job in Lowell for stealing gasoline from the city. Mercier appeared before a state board Monday, hoping the state forces the city to rehire him. • The Sun will also have the latest from Washington D.C. on the budget stalemate. Unless Congress hammers out an agreement, the government shuts down at midnight. • Reporter Rick Sobey, rsobey@lowellsun, has a story about Billerica Selectman George Simolaris. His publicity stunt in April offering four Red Sox tickets to the person who guessed closest to the number of Billerica voters at the April 6 town election has landed him in hot water with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance. • While one judge has reaffirmed his decision to dismiss the perjury charge against Michael Ferreira in the 1969 cold case murder of John McCabe, another judge has put a hold on the decision — keeping the case alive — while the district attorney’s office appeals. Courts Reporter Lisa Redmond, lredmond@lowellsun, is reporting this story. • Geo-thermal energy in Dracut? Don’t laugh. The state has given a Dracut landowner a grant to check it out. Reporter John Collins, jcollins@lowellsun, is reporting this interesting story. Find us on Twitter at: @lowellsunnews; on Facebook at facebook/lowellsun; on our mobile app; or on lowellsun. We welcome your suggestions, comments and contributions to staff members via their email addresses, or to Editor Jim Campanini (@suneditor) or jcampanini@lowellsun.
