It’s been several days since Red at Miami Theater Center closed and The George Zimmerman verdict was read. Needless to say, I’ve had a lot to process. During the research and creative process of Red, I thought a lot about how recently the Ruby Bridges’ story occurred and how that knowledge helped to mediate my own feelings of conflict around the the race issue in America. While themes, such as the power of community and the rights and traumatization of children, that motivated the Ruby Bridges story and my piece Red have parallels with the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman story, they are different pieces, though pieces of the same puzzle nonetheless. I am comforted by the fact that Red contributed to the open & honest conversation that is necessary to continue the healing and reconciliation process that we are all on. I am emboldened by Octavio Campos and Miami Theater Center’s production and support of the piece. I am humbled by the media’s coverage of Red. I am infinitely grateful to the collaborators, audience included, who made their own contributions to Red. Thank you all (especially Elana Lanczi, Larry Miller Jr., Dinorah De Jesús Rodríguez, Aj Hill, T Eliott Mansa, Megan Swick, Headley White, Chetachi Ogwui, Camille Harris, Christina Alexander, Asha Darbeau) for joining together to do this. Love, Afua
