It’s difficult to not look to Paramount’s restrictions as the source of much of the series’s problems. Its art was mostly sub-par – even with a legendary artist like Gil Kane pitching in on a single issue – but the writing was solid and faithful to the TV show’s original vision: exploring strange new worlds and civilizations. But a number of groan-worthy aspects--such as space gnomes, Count Dracula and Spock the Barbarian--kept most of the stories from rising above the level of meh. Jim does a great job of explaining the shortsighted contracts quagmire that created this problem.)
