Ive been so preoccupied with St. John Paul II that I fear that the other newly-minted saint, John XXIII, might make tampo already. Im writing about St. John XXIII by Wed. next week, particularly his monumental achievement, getting the Second Vatican Council going. But I simply have to write one more blog on how St. JPII went through his own personal Via Crucis over the last perhaps five years of his life and pontificate, and how he ended up in his own 12th Station (if you recall, in the Stations of the Cross thats when Jesus dies) just after his very last memorable Easter Sunday photo from the window of the Vatican. JPIIs biographer George Weigel, who had worked on his two volumes on JPII for 15 years (!) recreates the drama of the Popes last weeks and how he proved to be a true model of Christian suffering. Part of tomorrows blog will also reproduce some poetry JPII wrote, many of them inspired by the great Spanish mystic, St. John of the Cross, who was the subject of JPIIs dissertation for his doctoral degree in Poland.
