Ive been talking to my teenage nephew about how every generation feels judged by the older folks, trying to reassure him that the issues hes having with people telling him to cut his hair and that his music is evil will pass; and that one day in the future, HE will actually hear some kids music and think thats not music, thats just noise. He laughed and said, no way, but I guaranteed him it would happen (because it recently happened to me!). Anyway... This morning I heard one of my old favorite songs on the 1970s cable music channel. My grandparents had bought me the album for my birthday or Christmas (it was on my list) and then they complained that it sounded like just noise (yet Im sure my nephew would think that the Five Man Electrical Band was quite mild). The lyrics were considered radical when it came out in 1971 (the year my half-brother, my nephews dad, was born), and I thought the song might be a good example... that even back then folks were complaining about the long-haired freaky people. So, I went looking for a good YouTube version to share with my nephew. Well, I didnt find one for him; and only you, my peers, can imagine the horror I felt when instead of a nice recording of Signs, I came across this homemade cover...
