Ive done a lot of work under the Voting Rights Act. We have single member districts on the County Commission and the School Board in Miami-Dade County because several courageous community leaders like Xavier Suarez, Maurice Ferre, Jimmie C. Burke, Carrie Meek, and others stepped forward to be plaintiffs in the cases. (Xavier was a plaintiff in them both.) I was their lawyer. In the years since, things have not been perfect in our community. But every group has a seat at the table. And that is something I remain very proud of. (And a shout out to my brother Paul Wallace who was my able co-counsel in the School Board case.)
