Ive had some epiphanies about STRESS this week. This has been deeply on my mind as I have been dealing with the stress of trying to get a bunch of things done before my trip to Italy. I wanted to share my insights with you, hoping it might serve you... 3 STEPS to a STRESS-FREE LIVING: How to be the eye in the center of the storm. We all get overwhelmed at times. Caught in the race to do everything that is on our plate, and we are a little bit dismayed when we see that the moment we clear it, the plate gets full again. We stress about our to-do list with work, with home, with our kids. We stress about unresolved conflicts and problems both real and imagined. Stress doesnt come from having too many things to do... Stress comes from having too many things left undone, and not having a plan to finish them. - Gerald Rogers Stress is the bodies response to clutter and conflict within our mind. It happens when there are open-loops and unresolved stories inside our head. All stress is self-imposed. Two people can go through the exact situation, and one will be stressed and the other will not. Why? Stress always lies in our imagination. It is either in the past as we remember or re-live situations, conversations or traumatic experiences... or it is in the future as we imagine problems, challenges or difficult situations. When we can truly be present to this moment, this breath, there is no stress. Stress cannot exist in the clean space in our mind when we live in the NOW. Stress can be valuable, because it can show us where our thoughts, beliefs and actions are out of alignment with what we really want and need. But chronic stress has a ton of negative side effects in our health and life. Heres three simple steps to take when your mind is overwhelmed, your chest is constricted with tension, and you feel like you are going crazy... 1) MEDITATE: whether for 5 minutes or an hour, unplug from your to-do list, find a quiet place and clear your mind. At first, as you listen to the noise inside your head, your brain will feel like a total circus, and you will be able to observe the true source of your stress... in time though, as you let those thoughts pass without attachment, you will be able to return your focus to your breath, and explore what it feels like to dwell in the empty peace of the now. 2) CAPTURE YOUR THOUGHTS: create a list of everything that is on your mind, and on your to-do list, and get it out of your head and onto paper. This alone will free up space in your mind. Then take those things and get STRATEGIC. Organize them by priority, and decide what is a must, what is a should and what is a distraction. Figure out exactly how and when you will complete them. Once you have a plan, then your mind will be able to rest and focus. 3) CLEANSE YOUR LIFE: Learn the power of saying NO. Say no to what does not align with your highest self. Cleanse your environment. Clutter and chaos is the root of stress, so clean your physical space so your mind can relax. ELIMINATE from your life everything that does not serve. Throw away or donate anything you would not choose to carry into your new life if you were starting all over again. Clean out your closets, your desk, your rooms. Cleanse your relationships. Release the old relationships that no longer serve. De-commit from obligations that are not in your highest good. Have authentic conversations to heal past relationships. Cleanse your mind. Release the toxic thoughts that feed the stress and overwhelm and replace them with thoughts that empower you. Cleanse deeply and regularly. In the end, the most important key is focus on daily habits of HEALTHY LIVING. Exercise, nutrition, sleep, building meaningful relationships, asking for help, learning to say no, feeding your mind with positive information, nurturing and taking care of yourself... Dont get caught in the rat race, remember you are always in control of your own life.
