Ive just been informed some masjids in the UK have apologised for announcing Eid Al Fitr yesterday. The system given to us by the Prophet, peace be upon him, isnt rocket science. Even if the moon were hypothetically seen in Chile, South Africa or Morocco, it would in fact be bidah for us to use that to announce the start of the lunar month here in the UK. The Sunnah is that the moon should be sited somewhere within our own community or if the weather is bad, a neighbouring community close by. To all intents and purposes, for us in the UK, that means somewhere in the UK. If the moon isnt sited, the new lunar month begins 30 days from the end of the last lunar month. Why is this incredibly simple system so difficult to implement in practice? Really, it has nothing to do with whether people are Brelvi, Deobandi, Shia, Salafi etc. This oft made claim is merely used as a distraction from what has really been going on.
