Ive never understood the opt-out impulse. It takes all of the power away from parents and does nothing to reverse the deleterious effects (curriculum narrowing, excessive test prep, pressuring kids) of testing. If the goal is to improve a childs education, parents should announce at the beginning of the school year their intention to opt-out IF the testing tail wags the educational dog. Use their leverage to demand a full, well-rounded curriculum. The message is simple: give our kids a good education. Dont eliminate art, music, science and history, and leave the test prep books in the closet. Because if they come out, we opt out. By opting out, parents do nothing but incentivize school leaders to treat their kids as second-class students, because their data wont be included in their reviews or accountability measures.
