Ive noticed over the years, in our district more and more special needs qualifying students are being main streamed and therefore ride the regular ed buses. I have a new route this year and have been working with a 2nd grader since day one on riding safely in his seat, keeping his hands to himself etc. I have had numerous conversations with his special education teacher he has had since preschool. I have been asked to send any concerns in emails to the teacher and she gets back to me to discuss, but Im not to go into details with his parent. I have tried numerous reward systems to catch the student doing good. Today the student noticed that a fellow rider had forgotten a bag. She was one of 7 getting off at her stop when this student crashed through the students unloading, snatched up the bag yelling, She forgot this. I was able to say, You need to sit down, Let your friends by you. and reach out my hand to attempt to grab his arm as he bolted off my bus. He wiggled his arm out of his sleeve, so I had nothing to hold on to...And thankfully, he was not struck by a car in the street, and he did not run off...but he did exit the bus, with no evidence of even hearing me...Long story, I know...but the short of it...I was nearly done tonight, ready to walk away from doing what I have loved to do for years because the paper trail I am blazing just doesnt seem to matter when a parent does not want their child on a small bus. However in the blink of an eye, a situation can happen like this one tonight (and so many things were done that could be in question, I yelled out to him, I grabbed his arm, He ran off my bus, what if he was hurt, his parent doesnt even meet him at the bus stop anymore so I then had to let him walk home alone) and even with the best of intentions, my ass could be on the line...le sigh... Have you ever had one of those days, you were so happy to turn in your keys?...me too.
