Ive only ever tipped maids when staying for multiple nights in a hotel in another country. I expect the room to be clean when I get there (its what I am paying for in the first place right?) and I generally try not to trash the room while I am there, so other than the standard cleaning and sheet changing, there isnt a huge mess left for someone to clean up. When I have been in Europe or Asia and stayed for a week or 3-4 weeks in the same place, then yes I tipped, one because I didnt know if there was a minimum wage requirement in the country and secondly because I hope by tipping I dont have to worry about things being stolen. Maybe Im a jerk...but oh well.
