Ive seen some posts pop up on my feed citing the incident with Kanye West stopping his concert to berate the crowd into standing, and then insisting on verifying that the people sitting were indeed disabled, and claiming that the media blew it out of proportion. The media did not blow it out of proportion at all. But many of the people reading about it dont understand what its like to live with disability, and that you should never EVER feel obligated to prove that youre disabled, and you should never EVER be made to feel humiliated in public because you are disabled. Not to mention, that Kanye only conceded that the people in question were disabled and therefore allowed to remain seated, upon having verified that they have visible disabilities - one had a prosthetic limb that he or she held up as proof and the other had to be verified as wheelchair-bound by one of Kanyes bodyguards as visibly disabled. I wouldnt stand either, if I was at the concert, but I cant prove that Im disabled. I suffer from an invisible illness, and no one can see how much pain Im in, and how much it hurts to stand or walk most of the time. Even if Im not using my cane at that moment, or not in a wheelchair at that moment, Im still disabled, Im still in pain. Even if Im walking sometimes without my cane, it doesnt mean I can walk very far, or stand very long. I barely made it one mile this weekend, even with my cane and using another person as support on the other side of me. This is the best article I have come across to explain why what Kanye did was unacceptable, and might help people who dont truly understand why, to possibly understand a little better.
