Ive watched a number of episodes from the first season of Petticoat Junction on YouTube over the last few weeks. I have been amazed at a theme taught in episodes 7 and 8. Focusing on episode 7 -- which aired on November 5, 1963 -- Betty Jo Bradley (the athletic triplet) is able to throw a ringer in horseshoes every time. However, with some coaching from her mother, decides to deliberately miss one toss in order to protect the ego or reputation of the man known as Pixley Fats (who evidently has no ambition in life other than winning at throwing horseshoes). I realize that this show was fiction and was written by a man, but it is disturbing that women and girls (even in the early 1960s) were influenced to be something other than who God created them to be. If a woman or girl is gifted in a particular area, should she not -- in accordance with Matthew 5:16 -- Let [her] light shine before men in such a way that they may see [her] good works, and glorify [her] Father who is in heaven? To deny the talents, gifts and abilities that God has given you is to deny who He made you to be and what He put you on earth to do. May all women and girls correctly reconcile the teaching from this old episode with what is written in Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. I encourage all of my sisters to shine gloriously to reflect Gods goodness in your lives!
