Ive watched various posts about MLK float by today, and I apologize that I do not remember who posted this one. I think its telling that his name isnt trending, that he shares this day with Robert E. Lee in some states, and that political orientations (and Im not talking just left/right) can pretty reliably predict which quotes people use to commemorate him. Someone (I think Adwoa?) posted about the complicated feelings of this holiday when there is still so much injustice and violence and inequality. Thanks to everyone who has been working hard to complicate the legacy that has been handed down to us. Perhaps the best way to comprehend how King’s speech is understood today is to consider the radical transformation of attitudes toward the man who delivered it. Before his death, King was well on the way to being a pariah. In 1966, twice as many Americans had an unfavorable opinion of him as a favorable one. Life magazine branded his anti–Vietnam War speech at Riverside Church demagogic slander and a script for Radio Hanoi.”
