I’d Like to be Free of Sins A bedouin asked the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam): “Id like to be free from all sins.” The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied: “Bathe yourself from impurity and you will be free from all sins.” [Related by Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal] There are two types of impurities. One is the dirt that accumulates on the body while the other is the filth of sins that accumulates on the soul. The soul darkens and smells from the garbage of arrogance, grudges, animosities and all the varied disobediences of Allah’s commands that we pile onto it. Therefore, there are two types of bathing that must be performed to cleanse oneself. One is the physical bathing with water which has also been mandated by Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). Then there is the spiritual bathing to rid ourselves of the filth of sins that build up on our souls. How should we take this spiritual bath? Cry tears of repentance, remember Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) much, recite and study His communication to us (the Quran and Hadith), and perform the deeds He likes. These will scrub us internally.
