I’m going to be succinct: Main Tera Hero is a horribly bad movie. Terrible acting, insipid scenes, crass dialogs delivered so loud as if you’re being threatened to laugh all laced with an incoherent script where scenes seem to have been put as and when Mr. Dhavan remembered them. All in all, MTH has everything you wouldn’t want in a movie you’re spending your time and money to watch. So that said, I’m almost sure it’d make a lot of money. Varun Dhawan’s acting is downright filthy. The fact that he’s mentioned ahead of Nargis Fakhiri should say it all. The formula is pretty straightforward: Varun had a do a Salman Khan, and going by how horrifyingly loud, tasteless and utterly mindless he was, he seemed to have done a good job at that. He was topless about 60% of the movie (or flashed his well-toned abs); did obviously put effort in looking stupid and funnier dancing than he definitely would have normally; and was talking to bhagwaan ji ki moortis throughout. There were at least two direct references to “bhai” in what otherwise anyway seemed to be an out and out homage reel to Sallu by the Dhawans. Ileana and Arunoday were okay. Rajpal Yadav and Anupam Kher had long back stopped putting any effort to do anything different now so that’s that. Shakti Kapoor must have dropped by on the sets where he ended up doing a cameo because there’s nothing else that can explain his 100+ second presence (split over 3 scenes). Watching Saurabh Shukla did what he did almost made me feel sorry for the state of affairs. There was a scene where Varun’s caught trying to run away from Kher’s mansion (who’s “Asia and Africa’s biggest don”) and ends up dancing to a parody of badtameez dil. THAT and the title track were the high points of the movie. That should tell it all.
