I’m seeing indications that the next push by our local anti-rights, anti-gun zealots may be greasing the wheels for a voter ballot initiative on gun registration in MN (deceptively named Universal Background Checks – UBC). If passed, that would likely mean that ANY private sale or transfer, and possibly even guns that are loaned to friends, would be subject to involving the costs and services of an FFL. If registration/UBC goes to a voter ballot initiative, that would be very bad since we have so many low information voters in MN who fall for “feel-good” legislation, but fail to understand that gun registration/UBC would only impact and infringe upon honest, law abiding gun owners – not criminals and gangs who are most responsible for the violent crime in Minnesota. Criminals seeking guns illegally will not be deterred by any silly new “paperwork” requirement, which is what registration is, when they are already intent on committing violent crimes and breaking laws. Not to mention the NICS background check system is dysfunctional and incomplete and does not contain all prohibited persons (and it’s not likely to be robust any time in the foreseeable future). Make sure you’re having continued conversations with fellow gun owners who may not be as well-versed in gun rights politics as we’d like, and let them know that voting for such a measure is a bad idea. Also continue to share information with neutral non-gun owners and fence sitters about the facts on gun registration/UBC.
