I’ve been doing a little recreational musing lately about 1st and goal situations so I reached into the “way back machine” to pull out 2 of my favorites. Green Bay Sweep This beauty has pretty much been forgotten and dropped into the dust bin of history. I like to equate it to putting the ball into the Budweiser Beer Wagon and running the horses full speed at the defensive end. Imagine 2 pulling guards and a fullback leading a ball carrier who has the option, inside the end or outside. It was a fearsome sight. Here is Coach Lombardi describing the emotional impact of watching it develop. ... on that sideline, when the sweep starts to develop, you can hear those linebackers and defensive backs yelling, `Sweep! `Sweep! and almost see their eyes pop as those guards turn upfield after them... Its my number one play because it requires all eleven men to play as one to make it succeed, and thats what `team means. Considering the size, speed, and strength of today’s players can you imagine the impact of this play?
