I’ve been following the Citizen’s series about the challenge of student housing in established neighbourhoods. The City should adopt a student housing strategy, based on the following premise. As publicly-funded entities, post-secondary institutions should contribute towards the City’s goals on intensification, transportation and climate change. Governments are investing billions of dollars in light rail, which will directly serve Algonquin, Carleton and uOttawa. Why should these campuses still maintain acres of surface parking? The City (and Province) should pressure these institutions to first use up their parking lots for any housing needs, before encroaching further into established neighbourhoods. Parking can go underground below any new residence towers. La Cité Collégiale in Ward 13, omitted from these articles, has plenty of parking lots that can accommodate new housing.
