JOIN US: Tomorrow we leave the #iLoveMyLIFE Center 2pm to join @NYCJusticeLeague ON Steps of City Hall to Demand Justice 4 ALL Those KILLED Senselessly at Hands of LAW ENFORCEMENT ------------------------- JUSTICE LEAGUE NYC CALLS ON NEW YORK CITY LEADERS TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO REDUCE POLICE BRUTALITY AND RACIAL DISPARITIES IN POLICING-- PROTEST ORGANIZERS TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE AT CITY HALL WEDNESDAY TO CALL FOR A MEETING WITH MAYOR DE BLASIO, POLICE COMMISSIONER BRATTON AND OTHER CITY LEADERS NEW YORK, NY (December 8, 2014)—With the failure of a grand jury to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the killing of Eric Garner, and in the wake of six straight days of street protests, Justice League NYC is calling for a meeting with Mayor de Blasio, Police Commissioner Bratton and other city leaders, to present a list of demands that the city must take to circumvent an escalation in protests, including mass civil disobedience at targeted city and state properties. Justice League NYC will hold a press conference on the steps of City Hall on Wednesday, December 10th at 4:00 p.m. to address city leaders about the importance of listening to these demands. The group has been circulating a petition online with the full list of demands and is calling on Mayor de Blasio, Police Commissioner Bratton and other City leaders to meet and discuss steps towards redress and accountability. Among the demands Justice League NYC has circulated, includes calling on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to give Attorney General Eric Schneiderman the power to investigate excessive force and wrongful death cases by police officers as he outlined today in a public letter to Governor Cuomo. Justice League NYC also calls on legislators in the City and State of New York to promptly draft legislation making the chokehold illegal, with significant penalties for any officer who uses it. Citing the overdue need for NYPD reform, the group also demands an end to the NYPD’s “Broken Windows” policing, which overwhelming targets black and brown communities without affecting safety or reducing crime, and demands that the NYPD implement a training program to eliminate racial disparity and police brutality. Carmen Perez, Executive Director, The Gathering for Justice and member of Justice League NYC says the following, Justice League NYC does this work with respect and honor paid to the families of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Rekia Boyd, Ezell Ford, John Crawford III, Aiyana Jones, Tamir Rice, Vonderitt Myers, Jr., Yvette Smith, Ramarley Graham, Miriam Carey, Oscar Grant, Sean Bell, Akai Gurley, Sandra Amezquita, and every other victim of senseless violence at the hands of the police. Justice League NYC is a task force of juvenile and criminal justice advocates, experts, artists, and formerly incarcerated individuals, working together to awaken our moral and community conscious on issues negatively impacting society. The group is brought together under the banner of The Gathering for Justice, a social justice organization founded by Harry Belafonte in 2005. Justice League NYC is committed to direct and peaceful action until elected leaders in New York City and State take steps towards redress and accountability on the issue of racial disparities in policing and police brutality.
