JTF reports oil spill in Shell’s field -As SPDC advocates peace in Niger Delta Sunday, 25 August 2013 THE Joint Task Force in Niger Delta, Operation Pulo Shield, said on Saturday that it discovered oil spill in the oil field operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Bonny, Rivers State. The Media Coordinator of JTF, Yenagoa, Lt. Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the task force discovered the spill during anti oil theft raid. Nwachukwu said the JTF observed that the spill was caused by corrosion noticed along SPDC’s pipeline at Cawthorne Channel 2 area, adding it had notified the company to fix the leakage. “The patrol team reported a leakage close to a signpost marked KP-67 located around Pulokiri/Money Ground between Adamakiri and Creek 6 general area. An assessment of the spot reveals that a brownish liquid substance was observed jetting out from an opening on the pipe line. He urged Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to carry out a timely evaluation of the leaking point and effect immediate repairs to prevent further spill. When contacted, an official of the Public Affairs Department of the company, Mr Precious Okolobo, said the leakage would be repaired soon to contain the situation. Meanwhile, Shell, on Friday, said development could only be achieved in the Niger Delta under the atmosphere of peace. Its manager, Government and Community, Mr Evans Krukrubo, said this in Yenagoa at the company’s presentation of foreign scholarships to 14 indigenes of Ekeni and Ezetu communities. He said it was only when there was peace that oil companies could be in better position to contribute more to the development of their host communities. “If you do not have peace in your cluster communities, it will be difficult for the oil or any company to foster meaningful socio-economic development in the area,” Krukrubo said. He said the SPDC was partnering with the Bayelsa State government to ensure that the Global Memoradum of Understanding (GMoU) between the company and its host communities was fully implemented. He said that the SPDC was partnering with cluster-communities at ensuring that funds earmarked for their developmental projects were judiciously utilised. Krukrubo pledged that the SPDC and state government would ensure adequate monitoring of the administration of the funds.
