JUNIOR GAME REVIEW - Under 16s Burnside Heights: 9.14-68 Hillside 6.6 -42 After a much needed win the previous week, the Under 16’s returned home for the final time this season to face the arch enemy Hillside Football Club. We knew the game was going to be a tight battle and we would need to be ready to accept the challenge. 3rd place and the all important second chance in the finals series was their for both teams to grab if good enough. Before the game , the messages were kept simple. We again stressed to the boys how important it was to stop talking, consolidate our position and work hard as a team. Actions speak louder than words!! That’s the Motto of the team in recent weeks , and that’s what we are now beginning to do. If you get the actions right, everything falls into place. For the second week in a row we saw great team play for large portions of the match. We hit targets, chose the correct options and didn’t play selfish football. As a team we battled all day, kept our composure and displayed the level of discipline require to beat the best teams. At half-time we talked about the all-important third quarter – the ‘premiership’ quarter. The challenge was not to drop off , continue to play the team based football we had seen in the first half. The second half was solid, and our players kept focus on the job and played some nice football, despite some back to the wall moments in the 3rd quarter when Hillside made a run at us. They caught us out a few times being lazy to fold back to help in defence, however the boys dug in , we were helped with a few set shot misses from the opposition, and we went to the last break with a slight 3 point lead. To the lads credit they came out after 3qtr time and continued to push for what would turn out to be a vital win in the scheme of the season. It was commitment, teamwork, and a steely determination and attitude that produced the result. The boys have once again demonstrated that when they are able to keep their composure and play good, team orientated , disciplined football, they can beat anyone. Keep believing in yourselves boys, play as a team, continue to work hard on the training track and the results will take care of themselves. The job is far from over. We still have more challenges ahead, and we cannot enter this weekend with the wrong attitude. Overall we played a solid match. Its was a close fought game all the way until midway through the last term, when we were able to run away with the victory. All 24 players that took the field this week in one way , shape or form deserve to be in the best players. It was a very even contribution from all. How we conduct ourselves on and off the filed will ultimately define our season. As a team, we are now showing the growth and development as a team we have been looking for all season. Keep Focus , stick together and who knows what we can achieve this year. Finally a big thank you to Ernie Quintas who is stepped in for Linda Agius our normal team manager for the past few weeks, and also came out of boundary umpire retirement to give the under 16’s a helping hand this week. People willing to volunteer their time is what makes good clubs, great clubs. Thanks once again Ernie, Linda and all our under 16 helpers. The under 16 team this year has extremely lucky to receive the amount of support we do from people around the club. Our Runner is the Under 18 Coach and our Trainer is also a trainer from the under 18’s. You know you are at a great club when you see coaching staff and parent volunteers willing to help any team when called on. Shaun Newell
