Jan 26 Symposium of Ryerson Master of Architecture students designingthearchitect/ Armed with the faculties of creativity, intuition, and logic, a student of architecture fervidly learns to best create the spaces that enable and shape mankind’s existence. His education, grounded in a remarkable legacy of building, must also equip the student with the skills and dexterity to aptly engage with the complexities of our world today which are rapidly changing. The widespread availability of knowledge has revolutionized our global society, centering it around information production and synthesis. Furthermore, a history of reckless human forces against the environment have brought about an urgent obligation to mitigate climate change. It is in this context, our notion of what it means to be an architect in today’s world must likewise evolve, right from the outset of his learning. In response to this paradigm shift, how will architectural education seek to actively empower students to participate in this information age? How will it embody the breadth of ideas beyond design? How will the learning environment establish lateral academic connections, advancing the student in other areas of knowledge? Additionally, how will education embrace the ‘digital’, its new methods of representation as well as enhanced capacity of material design and fabrication? Lastly how can designers be sensitized to economies of reduced means, adequately preparing themselves to operate responsibly in professional practice? The education of the architect must be rapidly and critically revisited in order for tomorrow’s architecture to effectively act a catalyst for change.
