Janes Defense reports that the MANPAD used to shoot down the Egyptian Mi-8/17 in the Sinai on Jan. 25th was misreported by the Egyptians as an SA-7. Sunni militants intentionally obscured the front end of the MANPAD to hide its identity for security reasons. However, analysis of its length and the type and placement of the BCU reveal that it can only be an SA-16 or a Misagh-2. Im betting on the Misagh-2, which is the Iranian copy of the Chinese QW-2. Iran has been known to provide the Misagh-2 on rare occasions to terror groups and the fact that the terrorists took the trouble to hide the front of the MANPAD in the video indicates they are trying to protect their supply source. My book A Guide to Iranian Man-Portable Air Defense Systems for sale on Amazon explains this weapon in detail to include employment considerations.
