January 5, 2015: News from AMS 2015: NOAA’s Administrator Dr. Kathryn Sullivan announced that the GOES-R satellite is scheduled for launch in March 2016 and will continue observations during its extended post-launch testing through the 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season and transition immediately into operations afterward (around March 2017). This will make the enhanced capabilities of GOES-R available earlier, providing benefits such as better life-saving decision support services for tornadoes, wind, flash flooding, tropical cyclones and volcanic ash, as well as improved fire weather remote sensing and lightning detection.
