Jim Rome just did a Sports Radio Minute in which he claimed that the whining about Jeters walk-off being fixed is wrong because when you go to a movie theater you dont leave saying it was fake. OK, this is wrong on multiple levels. First, you pay money to see a movie KNOWING it is going to be scripted. You go into it with the awareness that what you are about to see is fixed entertainment. People pay money (a lot more money) for a sporting event because it isnt scripted. On any given day you might see something youll never forget. Secondly, even though we know it was scripted, there are still endless debates over whether something was believable. For example, we know the movie Independence Day was scripted yet people still question the suspension of disbelief required to buy (among other things) that an Apple notebook is going to be able to interface with alien technology. I dont buy that Jeters hit was fixed, but Jim Romes reasoning is just way off base. A better case would be that the game still meant something to Baltimore (a #1 seed and home field in the playoffs) and the offense had just rallied from a deficit in the top of the inning and no pitcher wants to be the one who gives that back.
