Jog the Swamp Trail on Roosevelt Island in D.C. You might have heard people refer to D.C. as a swamp in the humid months, but on Theodore Roosevelt Island this seems even truer. The island is in the center of the Potomac River and was built as a monument to Theodore Roosevelt on the 1930s. Its actually comprised of forest and swamp land that was designed by architects to resemble the overgrown island that once stood in that spot. Exercise is a great stress-buster and this trail feels surprisingly isolated, despite being a stones throw from both Rosslyn and D.C. Entry is free and the island is a 10-15 minute walk from the Rosslyn Metro station. From the station, walk toward the Key Bridge. A short connecting trail leads downhill from the downstream side of the bridge, across the parkway, and into the parking lot at Theodore Roosevelt Island, so theres no need to drive. Bicycles are not allowed on the island. Bicycle racks are located near the footbridge. Park Rangers offer tours that bring the islands secrets to light. Theodore Roosevelt Island is open year-round from 6 am to 10 pm.
