Judith Lerner at Bagels Too 166 North Street, Cultural Pittsfield, MA. For August, 2014, The Art Gallery at Bagels Too features photos on the spectrum of the Berkshire food paradox -- from foie gras tastings to soup kitchen suppers. Here in the Berkshires, Judith Lerner is known as a writer and photographer of Berkshire food and lifestyles. She writes about home cooks, ethnic traditions, gala dinners, restaurant kitchens and restaurant dining, cooking classes, food businesses, genetically modified food and hunger -- food insecurity these days. But, she couldnt think of a way to write a meaningful story of the widening separation she sees, here in the Berkshires, between the increasing use of free meals and food pantries and increasingly common food events costing upwards -- sometimes way upwards -- of $100 per person. Beginning with preparation for a show about food at The Marketplace Café in Pittsfield earlier this year, Judith found this story can be well presented using photos she took for various food stories. She can present through photography what she sees as the poles of current Berkshire food through the people who create it and partake of it. There will be an opening reception with the artist during First Fridays Artswalk on Friday, August 1st. Susan Gordon, owner of Bagels Too, will present a classic wine and cheese reception with extras and, of course, bagels.
