Julio Grondona dies The president of the Argentinian Football Association (AFA), Julio Grondona, has passed away at the age of 82 as a result of heart failure. He had been admitted to hospital hours earlier after feeling unwell and was later found to be suffering from an aortic aneurysm. The football executive was taken to Mitre hospital in Buenos Aires, initially as a result of feeling unwell. However, his condition worsened during his stay to the point where he had to undergo surgery, but nothing could be done to save his life. A press conference had been scheduled for this afternoon at the AFA headquarters in the city of Ezeiza (Buenos Aires province), where Grondona was due to announce the resignation of Alejandro Sabella as the manager of the national team. Grondona had been in charge of Argentinian footballs governing body for 35 years. He took the presidents seat just after the Albiceleste won their first World Cup in 1978, when the tournament was held in the South American country. Under his leadership, Argentina won Mexico 86 and finished runners-up at Italia 90 and Brazil 2014. He had also served as the FIFA senior vice-president since 1988.
