July 18, 2013 – Day 58 Today was the forty-seventh day of riding. I rode from Carthage Gap, OH to North Bend State Park, WV. I went 56.37 miles with a 1785 elevation gain. The average temperature was 95.5oF (without wind). I rode by myself today. It was a great day until I got on the North Bend Trail. I rode into Parkersburg across the bridge, crossing from Ohio into West Virginia. Shortly after leaving Parkersburg, I got on the North Bend Trail (at about mile 23). The trail was loose gravel with high grass. I didn’t enjoy it. I saw no one until near the end where I saw one truck, one cyclist, and five kids with fishing poles. I had to go through two tunnels with a WEAK light. One tunnel was 1840 feet long and the second tunnel was 1376 feet long. I couldn’t see more than a foot in front of me. At the beginning of the tunnels, I couldn’t see the light at the end. It was foggy in the tunnel and leading into it. All I was imagining in my head was bears. And I was thinking, “If I fall on this slick, mudding, bumping trail, it will be a very long time before someone finds me.” I about had a heart attack when I saw the first tunnel. I didn’t want to go through it. I was not excepting it. Luckily I had a light but it was so weak that it was pretty much useless. I also found out later that one of the tunnels was supposedly haunted. Glad I didn’t know that beforehand. We are off to pick Rick Lott up now…
