Just a simple thought or two..another few years and Im calling my teaching career quits...Ive always taught from a nurses perspective ,and I truly believe that that is what has made me effective...I deal with high school freshmen, and am one of the first influences (read role models) that they see...I teach in an inner city school atmosphere and I came from an inner city neighborhood(SouthBoston)... Over my career 11of my former students have become nurses , one is in medical school, three are paramedics, one is an army medic and one is a navy corpsman(who I believe may become a physician) three of my present seniors have been accepted into nursing school,and I wrote references for two of them...my kids know my history.. They know of my losses of my wives Regina and Patti to Cancer, and of my own struggles to become a nurse ..Im proud to be a nurse.. I never in my wildest thoughts imagined myself inspiring students to follow that path....I just read a post from a former student who became an Oncology nurse and just got a job at Yale ...and my heart sang...very selfishly I like to think I had a small part in those young peoples decisions to join me in a profession that changes lives...It has most certainly changed mine...
