Just because your voice reaches halfway around the world doesn’t - TopicsExpress

Just because your voice reaches halfway around the world doesn’t mean that you are wiser than when it only reached to the end of the bar.” Edward R. Murrow I just finished a biography of Mr. Murrow and I found the story really compelling. His life has had a huge impact in th over forty years since his death. He was one of the first to broadcast news as it happened. He stood on the roof of buildings in London and described the carnage of German bombs as they fell around him. The truth of his reports could be heard in the thundering explosions that composed the background to his reports. These days of the electronic tsunami allow almost any a venue to ventilate our intellect, or lack thereof, to an often unsuspecting world. As Mr. Murrow also said, “ Anyone who is not confused just doesn’t understand the situation.” I know the behemoth called “the information age”, has been both a blessing and a curse to me. I have read, heard and seen some things on the World Wide Web that I would not have opened my door to if I had a peephole to forewarn me. There is a lot of wonderful, useful, even edifying material to be enjoyed in the Instagram age. There is also a lot of trash. Notoriety is not necessarily knowledgeable. The same bigots, bad guys, con men and crooks who used to have to find you can now cloak themselves in anonymous pixels to put their thoughts in your mind and their hands in your pockets. In the past, we could shoot them. Now we consign them to the mystery meat of Spam. I just wonder what Mr. Murrow would make of all this?
