All this comes at an interesting time for Academi, which declined to comment for this article. The company responded in May to media reports that it had employees operating in Ukraine, calling the claims completely false. It also took that opportunity to distance itself from Blackwater, the company that became notorious for the alleged killing and injuring of Iraqi civilians in 2007, by detailing its relationship: Blackwaters owner sold the companys U.S.-based training facility to a group of private investors in 2010, who renamed the facility and the new company created to support it Academi. Interestingly, Erik Price, the former owner of Blackwater who retained rights to the name, has been getting some press of his own— telling the conservative group Maverick PAC that Blackwater could have successfully combated militant group Islamic State if the Obama administration had not “crushed my old business.” Four former Blackwater guards have been on trial since June 17 for the Iraqi shootings, with jury deliberations kicking off earlier this month.
