Just returned from a trip to Winterpark, FL which has an upscale, shopping and tourist area called Park Avenue. Talked to two business owners about rent and the recession. The property owners leasing their spaces significantly reduced rent during the recession in an effort to help keep those businesses from closing, one of which has been in business for 25 years. Now one of these businesses rent is tripling to the same amount that downtown Los Alamoss commercial rental rates has been for years. During the recession, the big property owners did not reduce rent to save businesses, so we lost our one and only bookstore, Otowi Station, which had been in business here for many years. Many other businesses went under and there was no outcry, no effort made by the citizens to keep businesses alive during the worst economic situation since The Great Depression. Had Park Avenue done we have done with our downtown, there would be no Park Avenue. Cant we learn something from this?
