Just saw Whiplash (2014 film)for the third time - this time with KISS master drummer Eric Singer. Cant think of another film that better encapsulates the existential quandary of to what extents one must go through to achieve greatness- in anything, but especially CREATIVE ventures. Hate to say it- but good enough is NOT good enough. One must practice, study, suffer, sacrifice and BLEED for what they want. I know this personally. So does Eric. As Ian Astbury once sang with The Cult- Ya gotta bleed a little while you sing, lest the words dont mean a thing... So with all due respect to those who are the real deal- and not to shit on anybodys dreams for which they ARE willing to bleed- - for all those out there (and you know who you are- or maybe you dont - which completely proves my point) who send me messages on a daily basis telling me they have an idea for a film, would like me to watch their you tube video they made over the weekend , want to be an actor because someone told them they have a look, want me to read their script they dont even know how to format properly and wrote having never gone to film school to study the SKILL of screenwriting- or gave up their creative dreams to raise a family but still want their comfort cake AND the cherry on top and are writing to me for my advice on how to break into the film business from the safety of their home in Iowa at age 40, or for those who really crave CELEBRITY and not ARTISTRY -- PLEASE PLEASE go see WHIPLASH before pressing the send button! ;0 Thank you! (Whew. Boy I feel better now having gotten that out. lol)
