Just some thoughts on the filioquibble (!): I think I am right in suggesting that, from an Orthodox point-of-view, the phraseology “the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son” can be considered either acceptable or heretical. It is its place in the Nicene creed which has been a stumbling block: 1) the Orthodox had a certain interpretation about this passage in the creed which would make the addition “and the son” heretical in their eyes. However, the passage in itself is not heretical with the addition “and the son”, it is just not what was expected from their way of thinking. 2) the Pope should not have inserted the words without talking about it first. Therefore, this got me thinking. Given that the Nicene creed can be read in an ‘Orthodox’ manner with or without the addition, surely after 1000 years removing the phrase from all Catholic services is a bit pointless. Even if it was removed, there is no guarantee of potentially non-Orthodox interpretations being abandoned. While I am Orthodox and think its insertion was not done in the most harmonious of ways, yet surely it could be left in if full communion were to be re-established?
