Just three hours until we begin a VERY important episode of The Brown Girl Collective Talk Show - Facing Our Truths, Saving Our Lives: Mental Health in the Black Community at 9PM EST on Blog Talk Radio - blogtalkradio/browngirlcollectivetalk/2014/04/22/facing-our-truths-saving-our-lives-mental-health-in-the-black-community. Tonights show will address mental health within the African American community. We recently lost Karyn Washington, the 22-year-old founder of For Brown Girls, to suicide and rapper Andre Johnson attempted to take his own life last week. The light of the media shines on those with some level of fame but, unfortunately, these are not isolated incidents. Our community tends to shy away from issues of mental health, depression and suicide, but we can no longer afford to do so. Show Guests Include: Actress/film producer Squeaky Moore, who is in the process of completing the documentary film, Face of Darkness, which addresses depression and suicide in the Black community. See the trailer here: youtu.be/6F1e2SO1TZk and follow Squeaky at squeakymoore/index.html. Dr. Tyffani Monford Dent, a licensed psychologist who is also the author of Girls Got Issues: A Womans Guide to Self-Discovery and Healing. Find her at monforddentconsulting./ Author/poet Brook Blander who has overcome the challenges of her childhood and become a prolific writer who uses her voice and her heart to help others who are in desperate situations. Learn more about Brook at brookblander/14/. If you have any questions that you would like to have addressed during the show, please send them to Talk@BrownGirlCollective.
