Justice Krishna Iyer has given an expansive interpretation to the right to life and liberty guaranteed by Art. 21 of our constitution and laid down many principles that many judges often forgot- (1) He forbade the handcuffing and mistreatment of prisioners. (2) Bail must be the rule and jail the exception for undertrials. Procedure must be fair and reasonable. (3) Judicial procedure cannot and must not be allowed to come in the way of justice. (4) A landmark judgement in Sunil Batra vs Delhi Administration(1978) to reform the jail condition of convicts. (5) the word industry in the Industrial Disputes Act would include all undertakings, including schools, hospitals, shops etc. (6) Profound humanitarian approach to the death penalty in Rajendra Prasad vs Uttar Pradesh (1979) .....and much more. His relentless advocacy for the last man, and against multiple forms of injustice, continued almost till his last breath. RIP Justice Iyer
