Justice again reigned supreme when several murderers of our colleagues in blue were sentenced to long prison terms. A word of appreciation is owed to our members who ensure that the murderers were arrested and brought to book for their evil deeds against colleagues. These convictions will also bring closure to the families of the fallen heroes. On Thursday, 7 August 2014, the Organised Crime Unit of the Eastern Cape secured a life sentence against Vuyani Zondani for killing Constable Thandiswa Bambiso in the Zwide Township, Port Elizabeth. Constable Mongezi Mqina and Constable Bambiso were on patrol when they saw people drinking in public. The officers approached them and Zondani shot at them while they were still in the police vehicle. He killed Constable Bambiso and wounded Constable Mqina. On Thursday, 7 August 2014, the court sentenced three police murderers to a combined 95 years’ imprisonment for killing Constable Yanga Tshefu of the Cape Town Central Police Station. Constable Tshefu and his common-law wife, Constable Josephine Nyalashe, were attacked in their house in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, while they were asleep with their seven-month-old baby. The three suspects shot Constable Tshefu in the abdomen and then fled after taking a substantial amount of cash and other small personal belongings from our members. Constable Tshefu died soon after his arrival at the hospital. On Thursday, 24 July 2014, the Gauteng West Rand Hawks secured a combined four life sentences and 124 years’ imprisonment against four criminals who had killed Constable Quite Menong of the Hawks in that area. Constable Menong was killed during a shoot-out between the police and robbers in Dobsonville, Johannesburg, while responding to an armed robbery call with his colleagues at the liquor store in Dobsonville. We are aware that there are more police murderers who are still at large, but we are confident that it is a matter of time before our members apprehend them as well.
