Kansas Statewide Transgender Education Project (K-STEP) announced today that the organization will be holding the first annual, TransKansas conference, September 6-8, 2013 at the Berth Nash Community Mental Health Center, 200 Maine St. in Lawrence, KS Nate Phelps, the son of Pastor Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church, will be the keynote speaker at a banquet on Saturday, 9/7 at the Lawrence Holiday Inn, 200 McDonald Dr. Phelps now lives in Calgary, Alberta and is a vocal LGBT advocate, and speaks out against the dangers of religion and child abuse. K-STEP is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that formed in August 2010 for the purpose of bringing an end to discrimination against transgender people and their families through education. “In almost three years, we have provided more than 200 educational presentations and workshops across the state”, said Stephanie Mott, K-STEP executive director. “This conference sends a powerful message that transgender people do not need to fear those who don’t understand, even in Kansas.” The TransKansas conference will include an opening welcome on Friday evening 9/6. Saturday will be the main part of the conferences with multiple workshops throughout the day. Presentations will include public policy (Thomas Witt - Executive Director of Kansas Equality Coalition), legal documents (David Brown - Law Offices of David J Brown L.C., Lawrence), transgender in the workplace (Scott Criqui, MHRM - Human Resources Manager, Trinity In-Home Care), and many more. The cost to attend the conference is $25. The cost to attend the keynote/banquet is also $25. For both the keynote/banquet and the conference, the cost is $45. Student discounts are available. The conference and the keynote/banquet are open to the public, registration is required.
