KATHMANDU, SEP 09 - India’s Zee TV on Sunday corrected its advertisements of a new serial “Buddha”, which claimed that Lord Buddha was born in India. This follows a huge public outrage in Nepal. Many social media users in Nepal criticised the channel for carrying factually incorrect description about the birth claim and vented their ire against the Zee’s promo and posting incorrect information on its website. Protesting against the claim that Buddha was born in India, Nepal’s Cable TV Association on Sunday imposed a ban on screening of the inaugural episode of Zee TV’s Buddha serial in Nepal, a historical magnum opus of life of Lord Buddha. Millions of Nepali households could not watch the hour-long opening episode broadcast on Sunday after the association banned the screening of the serial. However, the government has not put a ban on the serial, but, has not made any official comment on this issue. “After a huge public outrage we banned the screening of the Buddha today. We thought that it may hurt the sentiment of Nepali audiences and decided to stop screening the serial for the social harmony,” said Sudhir Parajuli, chairman of Nepal Cable TV Association. Zee TV had initially ran the promo, saying, “Believing in Yourself is Not a Religion … It’s a Way of Life!” If a man who walked the earth in the year 500 BC had the vision to say something that remains so relevant in the year 2013, it is nowonder, then, that he is counted amongst the most important personalities to have been born in the recorded history of India- Buddha!” However, after huge outrage and floods of criticism, the Zee later corrected the version on its website and replaced the word Indiawith Nepal. The promo aired until last week claimed that Buddha was born in India, showing some glimpses of the serial. It is unclear, however, how the Zee will make changes to the dialoguesand scenes in the serial while being telecast in the future. The association also informed about its decision to the government and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. Following the widespread criticism in social media, Kabir Bedi, the actor who is playing a lead role in the serial has apologised on his Twitter handle. “Yes, my friends, I mis-spoke. Forgive me! Lord Buddha was certainly born in Lumbini, Nepal. My apologies to all whose feelings were hurt,” he twitted. Posted on:2013-09-09 08:55
