KNSG TO ESTABLISH ADDITIONAL NURSING SCHOOL- KWANKWASO Kano state government may convert the new paediatric hospital complex at Zoo road in Kano municipality to a nursing school, the state governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwanwaso has announced. The governor explained that the aim is to have as many nurses for government hospitals as possible, lamenting that at the moment, pubic hospitals in Kano are suffering from dearth of paramedical personnel. Gov. Kwankwaso therefore assured that the state government is poised to reverse the trend through the establishment of schools of nursing and midwifery at Madobi, Bebeji and Gezawa, in addition to such existing schools in the state. The governor, who made the disclosure while receiving the chairman and members of the governing council of Northwest University, Kano in his office, stated that the government is also working towards affiliating Kano Informatics Institute with a university to enhance its academic programmes and students’ performance. He further revealed that the government, in conjunction with the authorities of the Northwest University, plan to ensure that the university adds more courses to its existing academic programmes, adding that the decision to use the Murtala Muhammed Library complex as the department of Library Science of the university is a step in that direction. In addition, the governor Kwankwaso announced that when the university relocates to its permanent site hopefully next year, the Ado Bayero complex would be used to accommodate additional faculties, thereby expanding the knowledge acquisition opportunities for the teeming youths of the state. On the progress recorded so far by the university, the governor thanked its management academic staff for not embarking on industrial action like their ASUU colleagues, lamenting that strikes have obstructed tertiary academic activities in the country to such an extent that Nigerian students now travel to neighbouring countries in search of sustainable university education. Earlier on, the chairman, Governing council of the Northwest University, Alhaji Sule Yahaya Hamma told the governor that the visit was to deliberate on sundry matters affecting progress of the university, especially establishment of its medical school, affiliation with Audu Bako College of Agriculture and intake of students for the 2013/2014 academic session.
