KORAN and THE PERSIANS Persians (Iranians) are not so naïve as to believe that morally unjustifiable text in the Koran are uniquely Islamic, nor are they blind to the complexity of linking ancient passages in the Koran with modern sensibilities. However, they are dismayed and upset by the fact that while other religious communities are searching for ways to soften insensitive and objectionable passages in their ancient scriptures by repudiation, request for forgiveness, or other means, the Shiite leaders of Iran reassert such passages and doctrines and actually go back to puritanical Islam of 1,400 years ago.
